Ty Webb was a 2008 summer associate and will join the firm’s Chicago office as an associate this fall.

When asked why he chose to spend the summer after his second year of law school at Brinks, Ty explained, "Brinks offered me a chance to gain experience in both patent prosecution and litigation in a number of different technology areas. When I interviewed at the firm, I got a general feeling that everyone enjoyed working together; it was this general sense of camaraderie that ultimately drew me to Brinks."

Participants in the Summer Program gain valuable, hands-on work experience and are assigned meaningful projects that help develop the skills necessary for becoming a successful lawyer. According to Ty, "The one project that stands out from the summer is when I flew to Cleveland with three attorneys to work onsite with a client. It was the opportunity to interact with clients that made the project stand apart from the rest." To complement their challenging work assignments, summer associates are also invited to participate in a wide variety of social activities. "My favorite social events of the summer were Wii™ Night and the weekly volleyball league," Ty said. "They were a little less formal than the other events and provided a good opportunity to interact with attorneys and other summer associates at the firm".

Brinks is proud of its commitment to pro bono work, and Ty strengthened that commitment by participating in our pro bono program. As a summer associate, he helped draft a clemency petition for a local Chicago woman through the Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic (CGLA). Describing his experience in the program, Ty said, "With the help of an attorney at Brinks, we conducted the intake interview, drafted the clemency petition, and submitted it to the Prisoner Review Board. While I was back at school last October, I was able to represent the petitioner at her hearing before the Prisoner Review Board. The experience left an impression on me, and I have continued to volunteer at CGLA."

Ty’s advice to future summer associates? "Support each other throughout the summer. During my summer, I enlisted one or two of my classmates to review anything I wrote (memos, research summaries, even emails). I am sure it greatly improved the quality of my work. Your fellow classmates are great resources that sit no more than ten feet away from you. Do all you can to help each other."

We’re looking forward to September when Ty joins the firm as a full-time associate.
